Events In Early History of Luzerne

The town of Luzerne, Iowa owes its founding to the Chicago nd Nortwestern Railroad Company. In 1859 the railroad was expanded as far west as Cedar Rapids. The following year the railroad was built as far west as Buckeye, half way between Belle Plaine and Luzerne. This was the end of the line for some time and before the founding of eiter of the two towns. 
The First Store and Buildings

 

     E.J. Ditzler erected the first store in 1867. The original building was moved from Buckeye. That building burned in 1887.

The second Ditzler store site is in the center of the block.

 

     By 1869, just two years after the railroad had come through, the town had about forty buildings, including a church and a school.

When Did Luzerne Become An Incorporated Town?

 

     The town of Luzerne became an incorporated city in November of 1895. Fred Torgler, the local blacksmith, was elected to become the first mayor. 

The First Viaduct

 

     The plan for a double track from Cedar Rapids' Bevrly Yards to Luzerne were made in 1896. The metal banister viaduct was built in 1896.

When Were Telephone Poles and Lines Installed?

 

     The Keystone-Luzerne Telephone Company was formed in 1902. By 1903, twenty one members were on the line.
